Meal Senior Nutrition Program Contact: Michael
Strader, Director Peace Meal is sponsored by the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at Eastern Illinois University. Areas served include Champaign, Clark, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Ford, Iroquois, Livingston, McLean, Moultrie, Piatt, and Shelby counties. Services: Congregate Meals: Noon meals are served in 73 community locations in Illinois. Many communities offer transportation to the site. Health and nutrition topics may be presented. In the Champaign/Urbana area, there are four Peace Meal sites. Home Delivered Meals: These meals are available for seniors who qualify for this service. A staff assessment will be made. Meals are available on a temporary or long-term basis. Volunteer Services: The opportunity to serve others as a program volunteer is a rewarding one for many seniors and "not-yet-seniors." Volunteers are a vital part of all aspects of the food program from setting tables to serving food, washing dishes, and delivering meals. Almost every phase of the program can use volunteers, and the program's success depends largely on the support of participants and others in the community. Peace Meal serves 1,600 meals daily in Central Illinois. Anyone age 60 and over is eligible for the service. A voluntary contribution is requested. No one will be refused meals. A 24-hour advance reservation is required.
