3. Aging Initiative Incentive Grants 2005-2006 Competition:
One goal of the Initiative on Aging is to foster an increase in extramural funding at UIUC in the area of aging. We are especially interesting in promoting the submission of interdisciplinary proposals that include multiple investigators across departments and schools. To help this endeavor, the Initiative on Aging will provides Incentive Grants to faculty submitting new major grant applications to government or private sources for the study of gerontological issues. Two incentive grants, for $10,000 each, will be given to faculty planning appropriate submissions.

Applications for Incentive Grants from the Initiative on Aging are due on February 1st, 2006. The applications should include letters (no more than 2 pages) and a c.v. or biosketch. The letters should include an overview of the research plan, identify the agency to which the grant application will be submitted, and specify the planned date of submission, which should be no later than May 20, 2007. The Incentive Grants will be administered as follows. $5000 will be made available by May 1, 2006, to support grant preparation or other scholarly activities (including summer salary, student support, travel, etc.) and the second $5000 will become available when the grant is submitted.

4. Aging Related Funding Survey:
The Aging Initiative is compiling a list of external grant funding in the area of aging.
We would like to have this information in order to demonstrate the scope of work in the area of aging across the campus. In order to make this as simple as possible, we are hoping that you will be willing to provide us with a list of funded projects you are involved in. PLEASE INCLUDE ANY PROJECTS THAT WERE FUNDED IN 2004-05. You can use an NIH "Other Support" form format, or simply copy information from your CV

Example:

National Blueprint on Physical Activity and Aging, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, August 2001- December 2004, Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, PI, $568,000 (total direct + indirect costs).

Please forward your funding information to the aging initiative office at aging@als.uiuc.edu

5. Program Project, Training, and Center Grant Support Mechanism:
Limited funds are available to senior faculty in support of applications for major Program Projects/Training Grants and/or Center Grants in the area of aging. Funds can be used for the collection of pilot data and/or other costs incurred in the process of preparing competitive applications. The process for applying for these funds is summarized below.
Mechanism to apply for a Senior Investigator Award:

Senior Investigators who wish to apply for funding under the Program Project/Training/Center Grant funding mechanism should follow the following guidelines;

i. Submit a 2-3 page summary of the proposed project. Include the names and departments of all participating investigators. Explain how the successful funding of this project will advance Aging Research at UIUC.

ii. Include a budget detailing how the requested funds will be allocated.

iii. Provide an anticipated timeline for submission of the proposal and anticipated funding dates for successful applications.

iv. Provide evidence of matching contributions from other units across campus (e.g. VCR office; Departments; Interdisciplinary Programs and Centers, etc.)

Re: Initiative on Aging Update

I am writing to update you regarding the status of the UIUC Initiative on Aging.

Recently, Chancellor Cantor announced that each of the Chancellor's Cross-Cutting Initiatives would receive a one-time allocation of $200,000 in order to facilitate cross-cutting research and scholarship on the UIUC campus. The Initiative on Aging was selected as one of the funded programs.

The Aging Initiative is in the process of developing a budget that will fund the Initiative for the next 2-3 years. It is our intention to continue to facilitate cutting edge research and discovery programs, effective learning experiences for students and relevant outreach efforts that engage policy makers, industry leaders and consumers.

Our plan is to attract additional funds for the Initiative from a variety of Federal, State and private sources. In the meantime, the infusion of funds from the Chancellor's office, together with money already committed from the Colleges of LAS, ACES, ALS, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine will enable the Initiative to continue to serve faculty and students for several years.

We will continue to provide the following services to the faculty and students with an interest in aging:

i. Identify faculty with research interests in aging
ii. Organize a campus-wide colloquium series on aging.
iii. Facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations in the areas of research and scholarship
iv. Provide seed money for Junior Faculty in support of extramural research proposals
v. Disseminate information about courses in the area of aging
vi. Sponsor an Annual Conference on Aging
vii. Collaborate on joint programs with other Chancellors Cross-Cutting Initiatives

In addition to the above activities, we also plan to provide limited seed money to senior investigators in support of applications for Program Project, Center and/or Research Training Grants. The Executive Committee is currently developing procedures for application for the Senior Investigator Grants. In order to assist us in our planning, individuals who are contemplating submitting Program Project/Center/Training grants are invited to notify the committee in advance by submitting a one page letter of intent outlining the key components of the proposed grant, the proposed agency, grant personnel as well as a proposed timeline for the project.

Executive Committee Membership:

Two vacancies are available for one Junior Faculty member and one graduate student on the Aging Initiative Executive Committee. Nominations and/or self-nominations should be forwarded by e-mail (aging@als.uiuc.edu) to the Aging Initiative office on or before April 30, 2003.

Joining the Aging Initiative:

One of the first goals for the Initiative is to compile a directory of researchers and scholars working in the area of aging. If one of your colleague or student's areas of specialization is aging, please invite them to submit a brief biographical sketch (description of research interests; 5 most relevant publications; research keywords; photo) for publication in the Initiative Directory and on the Initiative Website.

To view some sample bio sketches, please visit the initiative website at http://aging.als.uiuc.edu/faculty.htm

To submit information, applicants can:

Either

1. Input information by completing this web-based form http://aging.als.uiuc.edu/bio.htm

Or

2. E-mail the requested information to aging@als.uiuc.edu

Thank you.
