This Division is dedicated to studying the Psychology of Adult Development and Aging. The site offers a variety of resources, including information about the Division, resources for educators (e.g., syllabi, videotape listings), information about graduate programs for students interested in pursuing this field, publications summarizing recent knowledge about adult development and aging, current conference information, and many useful links. College of Sports Medicine Scientific and medical association of sports physicians, exercise scientists, and other health professionals with an interest in exercise. Trains and certifies people to work with older adults. Send self-addressed, stamped envelope for free brochures. Be sure to specify that you want material on exercise for older adults.

Diabetes Association Offers free pamphlets about exercise for people of all ages who have diabetes. Request "Exercise and Diabetes," "Starting to Exercise," and "20 Steps to Safe Exercise."

Cognition
and Aging Laboratory - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Dr. Park's Cognition and Aging research program is focused around a common theme: understanding the interplay between neurobiological and experiential forces on cognitive function across the life span. From this general theme, three lines of research have been developed, each supported by a separate funded project. The first line, which is on the basic cognitive neuroscience of human aging, focuses on age-related changes in the neurobiological landscape that supports overt cognitive behaviors. The second line of research is focused on the study of aging, culture, and cognition. The third line of study addresses the impact of cognitive aging in everyday life.

Disabled
Sports USA Provides free pamphlets about exercises for older adults and others with disabilities. Examples include wheelchair or armchair exercises for paraplegics and others; exercises for people with limited range of motion; and endurance activities for amputees, with focus on correct balancing. Videotapes also available for price of tape plus shipping and handling.
50-Plus
Fitness Association Nonprofit organization that promotes fitness and active lifestyles for people 50 and older through a variety of activities, including walks, fitness events, seminars, and newsletters. Membership costs $35.00 a year (people of any age may join). Provides information for people interested in starting a 50-Plus chapter in their locale. Videos and books on fitness for older people also available, costs vary.
Jewish
Community Centers Services differ from location to location; most offer a variety of exercise and physical activity programs for older adults. All denominations welcome.
Mature Fitness Awards
USA Offers 25 activities for older adults, from beginning exercisers to long-time fitness enthusiasts; many of the activities are appropriate for (or can be adapted for) disabled participants. Adults age 50 and older who engage in regular physical activity may receive awards through this program. Write for a registration form and activity log.
Melpomene
Institute Melpomene strives to increase the knowledge and opportunities for girls and women in sports and physical activity. Dedicated to research, education and publication, Melpomene offers information on aging and exercise, larger women and physical activity, body image and menopause.
National
Aeronautics and Space Administration The Life Sciences Division accomplishes research and technology engineering of relevance to the study of aging and collaborates in these endeavors with the National Institutes of Health, including the national Institute on Aging. The Outreach program of the Life Sciences Division can be contracted through the website. It operates a variety of programs and projects that support information exchange and encourage participation in the Division’s activities by the public, educators, and students.

Association of Governor's Councils on Physical Fitness Sponsors physical-fitness events for older adults; these events vary by state. Ask for address and phone number of your state's association.

Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Part of the National Institutes of Health. Offers free publications, on exercise, diet, and cholesterol.

Northeast
Training Center for Senior Athletes (NETCSA) NETCSA provides training, instruction, and experiences to individuals 50 years old and older who compete or aspire to become competitive in sports. NETCSA is presenting a workshop for athletes 50 and over from June 23-25 2000 at Ithaca College.
The
President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Provides "Pep Up Your Life," a free exercise booklet for older adults, in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons.
